Job van Amerongen was born in Veenendaal in 1946. He studied Electrical Engineering at Delft University of Technology where he obtained an MSc. Degree in 1971 and a Ph.D. degree in 1982. From 1971-1973 he did his military service as officer in the Royal Netherlands Navy. From 1973-1987 he was assistant and associate professor at the Control Laboratory of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of Delft University of Technology, where he worked on applications of modern control theory, especially model reference adaptive control, in ship control systems and electrical power production systems.From 1987-2011 he was professor in Control Engineering in the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at the University of Twente. From 1994-1998 he was dean of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering. In the first half year of 1999 he was on leave at the University of Newcastle in Australia. From 1998-2006 he was scientific director of the Drebbel Institute for Mechatronics. From 2005-2011 he was head of the department of Electrical Engineering and since 2010 vice-dean of the faculty Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS). From 2008-2011 he was member of the team that worked on a new curriculum on "Creative Technology." Since November 2011 he is professor emeritus. Until 2013 he worked part time, teaching Dynamical Systems in the Creative Technology programme. He is still involved in several activities in the Robotics and Mechatronics Group and in the Department of Electrical Engineering.
He is member of the IFAC Technical Committee on Mechatronics, the IFAC TC on Marine Systems and international member of the IMechE Mechatronics Working Group in the UK.
His current research interests are applications of modern control theory, especially intelligent control, in mechatronic systems. He is also involved in the research in modelling and simulation of dynamical systems and in embedded control systems. He is (co-)author of many papers on adaptive and intelligent control systems, mechatronics and automatic steering of ships, co-author of a book on adaptive control systems and author of three courses on systems and control of the Dutch Open university. His recent book 'Dynamical Systems for Creative Technology' is available as a printed version and as free pdf download with links to multimedia content.
He is member of the 'Royal Holland Society of Sciences and Humanities'.
In April 2013 he became "Officier in de Orde van Oranje-Nassau".
